"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates." Deuteronomy 4: 6-9

Training for a 5K

With the new year and the talk of "New Year's resolutions", Matt and I began discussing our health, fitness, eating habits, etc. It's no big secret that Matt and I love food, especially my love for sweet tea, and Matt's love for McDonald's! And although there's nothing wrong with enjoying food, the realization of making healthy food choices and exercising was something we needed to pay more attention too. I have always loved running, but got out of the habit once I became pregnant with Carson. I started running again towards the end of the year last year, with the boys during the day, and I was incredibly excited when Matt decided he would start jogging/walking with me in January. It has turned into major goal setting in our house! Matt and I started off jogging/walking about 1-2 miles a few times a week with the boys at night after Matt got home from work. Eventually, just like with any exercise, your body begins to get used to that same routine, so you have to step it up a notch. We load up the boys and our double jogger in the evenings and are running over 3 miles, nonstop, now at various trails and parks. The best part is Matt has lost over 20lbs with our new food choices and exercise. The boys love to stretch with us before our run, and do pretty well in the stroller for the 3+ miles. They sing songs, eat snacks, and cheer us on. We usually run in an area where there's a playground so after our run they get to play. After we hit our distance goal set for the night, we let Carson run the last part with us.
I never thought, just based on the lifestyle Matt and I used to lead, we would ever have a goal of running in an actual race, but we're looking forward to signing up for our first 5K here very soon and love this activity as a family!
